Welcome
to class Y6AC
Miss Cochrane
Meet your teacher
Hi, I’m Miss Cochrane and I’m going to be your teacher next year. I hope you are ready for the jam-packed year ahead! I can’t wait for all of the amazing memories that we are going to make and all of the new things that we will learn and discover together in our Y6 team. This will be my 9th year at Aston Hall, where I’ve taught in Y4, Y5 and Y6. I’ve got to admit, UKS2 is where I love to be especially the trips, residentials and the KS2 production!
In school, I am the Maths leader and it’s got to be one of my favourite subjects to teach- I especially love tackling really tricky problems that get your brain thinking. I also love the history topics we learn about in UKS2 – I always find myself learning new things alongside all of you!
I grew up in a village in the North East called Marske By The Sea, but I’ve lived in Sheffield for the past 11 years after I came here for university and never left! In my spare time, I love going to the Peak District and also regularly visit the Lake District, where I love to take on the challenge of climbing mountains there. I also love going to new places- this summer I’m off to Vietnam on my holidays so I’m sure you’ll be hearing all about that in September!
Meet your Teaching Assistants
Mrs Wall
I’m Mrs Wall and I have worked at Aston Hall in various roles over the last 4 years and am now a Teaching Assistant, often in Y5 and Y6. I am a qualified primary teacher and taught for 12 years – mostly in year 6. Working with children is really rewarding and seeing them make progress, and grow as people, is why I love my job. It’s really important to develop trusting relationships with our older children as they prepare for the next steps in their education and become confident young people. I enjoy spending some of my time supporting our more vulnerable children too.
Away from work, I had my own cake business for 4 years before my son started school, making birthday cake and supplying a local play town. I enjoy gardening and run the outdoor club at school during the warmer months and a crafty things club in the winter such as macramé or cross stitch. I am very much looking forward to working with you as you move into UKS2!
Areas of Learning
UKS2 have an exciting first term planned with plenty of new learning experiences! In history, we will be learning about The Mayans where we will discover information about key figures and significant events during this time period. We will also be beginning a new geography topic which will be a study of Africa. We will be learning about where it is in the worlds as well as finding out about the human and physical features of different countries in this continent.
Our English lessons are always delivered through high-quality,engaging texts, and this term we are studying ‘Wonder’ by R.J.Palacio. This is a fantastic book with many PSHE links. Whilst studying this novel, we will have many opportunities to write in different styles which will allow us to vary our, viewpoint, audience, language and
punctuation. Through this novel, we will be exploring themes such as friendship, kindness and courage.
In Maths, we will begin the year by focusing on place value, ensuring that children are secure in their knowledge of numbers up to 10,000,000, including negative numbers and rounding skills. Following this, we will be moving on to securing the children’s knowledge of calculation, beginning with methods for the four operations and the
application of these to problem solving contexts.
Class Information
Our classroom will be located in the new building (in my current classroom), alongside Y5/6ME next door. There’ll be more information about our PE days, homework and school visits in September.
