Welcome to Y5
I am really looking forward to seeing you all and joining the Upper Key Stage 2 team. I can’t wait for all of the amazing memories that we are going to make and all of the new things that we will learn and discover together. It’s going to be an exciting year!
Hi, I’m Miss Yearsley and I am the Year 5 teacher at Aston Hall.
I really enjoy teaching, especially English as I got my first degree in English
Language. I am originally from Stoke – On – Trent but I moved here for University and I decided to stay.
I spend my free time reading, listening to music or spending time with my pets; two cats called Wilma and Luna, and my cocker-spaniel called Miller. I love to go to Rotherham United games with my partner, hence my dog being called Miller. There are a lot of interesting things about
me: I am related to a famous darts player; Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and my nana, who is one of eleven, is from Cornwall so I spend most summers in Cornwall with my large family.
This year’s main topics:
We have an exciting first term planned with plenty of new learning experiences, which will begin with our topic ‘Frozen Kingdom’. A geography focus will help us to find out all about the polar regions and their physical features, including glaciers and natural resources.
As well as this, we will delve into the life of a key figure, Ernest Shackleton, learning all about the scientific discoveries made on the extreme polar expeditions that he lead. The work of Nerys Levy will be the inspiration for our art unit this term, as we develop skills in colour mixing and using tones, tints and shades.
In our English lessons, we will explore themes such as courage, bullying, family and friendship through our novel study book, ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio, which will guide us through the life of August Pullman, a ten-year-old boy born with a rare medical condition. The book will provide us with the opportunity to have quality discussions and debates about our own life philosophies, morals and principles that will feed into our many writing opportunities, developing our use of style, viewpoint, language and punctuation.
