Year 6 is a really important year; the children are working hard towards their SATs in May but also enjoying their last year at Aston Hall making lots of fun memories with each other! We have lots of things to look forward to this half term: a climbing wall experience, internet safety day 2020, an exciting topic to get stuck into and many more.

Latest Information

Our novel study this half term is Beowulf. We have begun exploring the gruesome beast – Grendel, and we have lots of fantastic writing opportunities linked to this book: stories, debate writing and poetry.

Reading is really important in Year 6; throughout the week, we complete lots of different reading activities: class shared book, 10 minute texts where we focus on specific reading domains, and completing practise SAT papers. We encourage children to read at home too – at least 3 times a week on bug club or reading favourite books, magazines or comics.

In maths this term, we will be recapping all of our maths skills consolidating our understanding of number and place value, fractions, decimals and percentages and measurement. We will also big focusing on our reasoning skills which will help support your child with reasoning papers they will completing in May. Fridays will continue to be arithmetic Fridays where will be unpicking papers and developing our mental maths skills.

We have started the year learning about our new topic – Vikings! We will be exploring Viking life as well as learning about the Viking warriors and their weapons they used to fight in battles. Over the next week, we will be designing our own Viking shields as well as looking at creating our own beasts to go along side our Beowulf stories in Literacy.
