Welcome

to class Y1AP

Miss Poole

Meet your teachers

I am so pleased to welcome you all to what I am sure will be a fantastic year.

I’m really looking forward to getting to know each of you. I am sure we will all get on really well. We have lots of exciting things planned for your first year in KS1 and I can’t wait to get stuck in!

My name is Miss Poole and I have been teaching at Aston Hall since 2016. I have taught across both Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage throughout my teaching career. I adore teaching as it gives me so much joy to watch children learn and grow.

At home, I have a little, mischievous kitten called Billy who I love to pieces! In my spare time I love to read a good book. I’m a huge nerd for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. One of my favourite things to do during the school holidays is visit art galleries. My favourite artist is Da Vinci and I have travelled abroad to see lots of his work. Meet your Teaching Assistants

Miss Bell

Hello, I’m Mrs Bell and I’ve worked at Aston Hall School for just over 10 years now. In my time here, I’ve been an SMSA and help to run Breakfast Club. More recently I have become a Teaching Assistant working across both EYFS and Key Stage 1 – I absolutely love my job! I especially like to help children with their Phonics. I was once a former pupil of Aston Hall and both my children have attended here too.

In my spare time I love to travel with my family exploring new places and love going for long walks with my dog Bonnie.

Mrs Grady

Hi. My name is Mrs Grady and I began working at Aston Hall just before Christmas. I already knew the school well though, as I have a teenager who came to Aston Hall, and I have a son that is currently here. I also came here as a child!  I’m really enjoying working in different classes and getting to know all of the children. I have been a teacher for over 20 years and I really enjoy working with children and seeing them progress through school.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, running and watching films. Disney and superhero films are some of my favourites! I also love going to theme parks and on other days out with my family.

Mrs Gray

Hi my name is Mrs Gray. I’m new to Aston hall as a teaching assistant but know the school very well due to my 3 boys attending. I’ve got serval years of experience working with children at other schools and I’m really looking forward to building new relationships with all of the children at Aston Hall.

In my spare time I love to travel and explore new places with my husband, children and our dogs Milo and Roxy in our campervan.

Miss Pearson

My name is Miss Pearson. I have worked at Aston Hall since September 2023. Previous to this I worked in a SEND college. I currently support our children who have additional needs over in Rainbows. I love my job and enjoy watching them grow and love helping them achieve and celebrate their milestones. I have 1 little boy called Joseph. Out of work I enjoy taking my little boy to the park, play areas and trips away.

Areas of Learning

In the Autumn term we will be learning about Castles in History with a focus on Conisbrough Castle. Within our Geography learning we will be learning about Rotherham and what it is like. As part of our Geography we will be going on walks around the local area and completing fieldwork. Our Novel Study text is ‘Meerkat Mail’ in Autumn 1 and ‘Stickman’ in Autumn 2. In Science we will study humans and animals, focusing on habitats and life cycles. Within Maths we will be starting off by learning about place value and then moving onto addition and subtraction. For Art, our Artists for the Autumn term are Linda Lang and Katsushika Hokusai.

Class Information

Keep an eye on our class dojo page throughout the term as we will be updating it regularly with messages, pictures and information about current learning.

Homework in KS1 is through a ‘menu’ system. Each half term children will receive a homework sheet with a selection of activities to complete and return each week. They can select their own activity to complete. Homework is sent out on a Friday and we expect it to be handed in by the following Wednesday.

Children will have 2 PE sessions a week. We ask that all children have their PE kit clearly labelled and in school all week as PE times can change unexpectedly. PE dates to be confirmed.

We teach phonics daily using Little Wandle. Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child will bring home:

A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently. Your child will have the opportunity to read this book in their reading group sessions in school 3 times a week. They will bring it home daily to read to you. Please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Please listen to your child read at least 3 times a week and sign their reading record.

A sharing book or ‘snuggly up’ book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together. The children select these books from the school library or class book corner.
