Y1AP

Welcome to Y1AP

We have been working extremely hard alongside all of the children to ensure that all members of Y1AP reach for the stars and make great progress this year.

Phonics

The teaching of phonics is a key strategy that is used to help our children to read, write and spell. At Aston Hall Junior and Infant school, we want every child to become a successful, confident reader and writer by the end of KS1 and we believe that accessing high quality daily phonics plays a vital role in this. In Y1, we recap phase 3 phonemes (sounds) and teach phase 5 where the children learn alternative spellings for previously taught phonemes. To support phonics at home, you will be given a phase 5 phonics workbook to work through at your own pace as home learning.

Reading

Our class love to read! Your child will read and complete reading activities every day in our morning reading session, along with independent reading and class 30-minute comprehension texts. We are working hard as a school to encourage children to read every day at home either a reading book or on Bug Club. To encourage reading at home we will check each week who has read (either Bug Club or a reading book) and award dojo points.

Maths

Children receive high quality maths teaching daily at a level which is appropriate to their needs and as part of a learning journey. This term in maths we are covering addition and subtraction. Children are practicing their number bonds to 10 and 20 daily to help with their mental arithmetic.

English and Novel Study

This term, our novel study text is Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. The children are really enjoying the story so far. We have used the book as a stimulus for writing character descriptions, diaries and letters.

Topic

We have been enjoying our history topic – the 1970’s! The children have learnt about significant figures, dance, music and fashion from this era. We have produced timelines of events and music and we have even practiced some of the dance moves! Thank you to all of the grown-ups who have bought in 1970’s memorabilia to support this learning. It has been great for the children to see ‘real-life’ items to make this topic meaningful.

Important Dates and Information

PE – Our current PE day is Tuesday. We recommend that your child has keeps their PE kit at school in order to participate in both of these sessions and that they have both an indoor and outdoor PE kit. Tuesday PE sessions are led by Mr Snaith, a sports coach from the Wickersley Partnership Trust.

Our Trip to Cannon Hall Farm will take place on Friday 28th February. The coach will depart at 9am and return to school for 3pm.
